Veganize Any Recipe with Confidence!
The Complete Guide to Vegan Food Substitutions is your secret weapon to turning any recipe imaginable into a deliciously “veganized” success—no guesswork or hard labor involved. And no more kitchen failures or recipe flops either. Simply look up whatever non-vegan ingredient you want to sub out, and expert author team Celine Steen and Joni Marie Newman will explain exactly what substitution is best to use and how to make it without compromising taste or flavor, so you’ll create dishes that are not only better than the “real” thing, but healthier, too.
With more than 200 recipes and substitutions that show the swaps in action, you’ll find step-by-step instructions for replacing everything from butter and bacon to gelatin and gouda. You’ll also find healthy substitutions for replacing things like gluten, sugar, and fat, so you can fine-tune any recipe to your dietary needs.
Stunning photography and easy-to-follow charts, like the sample one below, appear in every chapter, making it a cinch to dip in and out whenever you need a quick reference or recipe.
If you’ve always wanted to turn your aunt’s famous mac and cheese into a veganized taste sensation, or your grandma’s buttermilk pie into a rousing, “reinvented” success, The Complete Guide to Vegan Food Substitutions is the solution you’ve been looking for!

Hi there, I’m Celine. I’m a Swiss expat and live in California with my jolly good fellow and our rescued cats.
I’m a bike fiend and I love it. Admittedly, riding a bike with nothing but a small basket attached to it makes for expletive-filled rides home when you try to stick to only one day of grocery shopping per week…
I started writing about food 6 (or so) years ago, and I was just doing it to share foodie experiences with like-minded folks. I’m still doing it for the same reason.
I am vegan for ethical reasons, but relax: the fact that the only animal product I knowingly ingest is cat hair sprinkled over my food doesn’t make me feel superior. We’re all okay. For the most part.
As far as photography goes, I use a Nikon D700 fitted with a 50mm f/1.4 lens. I occasionally go back to using a Canon XTi with its 60mm f/2.8 lens. I’m even Swiss when it comes to being neutral towards camera brands, ain’t that peachy?
I prefer using available morning light combined with a simple reflector to eliminate pesky shadows, along with a cheap sheer curtain hanging from the window to make for a soft light. Then I dabble in the black arts (aka Photoshop and sometimes Lightroom) to tweak things to my liking.
That being said, you don’t have to part with any of your limbs to get good results: have a look around flickr and you’ll see some amazing stuff taken with P&S cameras. Besides, they fit in the back pocket of your pair of jeans these days, which can’t be said about bulky DSLRs. (That would make for painful and costly sitting downs.)
I’m more than open to volunteering my time in any way I can if you are a company/charity/group/lone person working in a small or big way towards improving the lives of animals, so get in touch and let’s have a chat.
