Amy Goldman is a passionate gardener, seed saver, and well-known advocate for heirloom fruits and vegetables. “Many heirlooms have been preserved and handed down by generations of farmers and gardeners because they taste great and perform well.” Heirlooms are a more delicious, healthy, and beautiful alternative to the industrial produce on the market.

Amy celebrates and preserves the agricultural heritage and genetic diversity of the world’s fruits and vegetables in several different ways:

Every summer, Amy grows hundreds of different varieties of heirloom vegetables in her gardens in upstate New York. Her primary purpose is to cultivate and save the seeds of the most noteworthy of these endangered species.

Amy’s first book, Melons for the Passionate Grower, received critical acclaim as “a feast for the eyes and a serious reminder that biodiversity is admirable and necessary.” Her next book, The Compleat Squash, presented150 must-grow pumpkins, squashes, and gourds that offer unsurpassed beauty, exceptional flavor, and rare forms.  Her latest book, The Heirloom Tomato: From Garden to Table, presents the history and allure of the tomato with the expertise of a true insider.  It offers advice to avid gardeners, along with recipes to whet every appetite.

Amy is a persuasive advocate for heirloom varieties. Her mission is to celebrate and catalogue the magnificent diversity of standard, open-pollinated varieties, and encourage conservation. She serves on the Board of Seed Savers Exchange, New York Botanical Garden and New York Restoration Project. She appears regularly on television shows such as Martha Stewart Living and The Victory Garden and has been profiled in The New York Times and House and Garden.
